Wigtownshire Coat of Arms (County Council and District Council)

The Coat of Arms for Wigtown (County Council and District Council).

The arms show the silver lion of Galloway crowned by an antique golden crown. The lion represents the two important families; the Douglas of Galloway and the Macdouall (crown). The silver chevron is taken from the arms of Fleming, Earl of Wigtown. The sun is taken from the seal of the Burgh of Wigtown. The chief shows a golden saltire, derived from the arms of Dalrymple, Earl of Stari. The saltire and the chevron also were part of the Agnews family of Lochnaw. The ermine bar recalls that all parts of the arms are derived from the arms of a Peerage House.

The IBD Home Page and each IBD County Page has or will have (where possible) the relevant Coat of Arms. This is made possible thanks to a fantastic heraldry website called the International Civic Heraldry Website. Sometimes a description is not given due to lack of information, so if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. You may visit this superb site by using the link below.
