Investment Castings Lost Wax Precision Process - Design to Finished Components

Lost wax castings in Aluminium Stainless Steel Bronze Non-Ferrous...

Investment Castings (Congleton) Ltd are a leading UK supplier of quality castings with over 50 years experience in the industry. We use the lost wax casting process to create precision critical investment castings, from initial design to the completed components.

The lost wax process is used to produce castings in a very diverse range of materials including:

  • Aluminium Castings
  • Stainless, Carbon, Nickel and Cobalt Steel Castings
  • Copper based Alloy Castings
  • Non-Ferrous Castings
  • Phosphor Bronze
  • Lost Wax Process
  • Other metals can also be cast, please contact us for more details

Design of Precision Components by Investment Casting Process

Why choose an investment casting, how does it work...

A wax mould of the component to be cast is produced by injection-moulding high-technology wax into a metal die. A number of wax components are then mounted on to a wax runner which is then dipped (or invested) in to a ceramic slurry. Further layers are added and then dried to give the shell sufficient durability for the molten metal. For quality to cost, the process offers unrivalled performance benefits.

The wax is removed (for this reason, the process is sometimes called a lost wax process) and the shell is then fired to leave a ceramic impression of the part to be cast, in to which molten metal is poured.

Once the metal has cooled, the shell is removed leaving a casting that requires little or no finishing. Tools are generally quicker and lower cost to produce than with alternative casting methods, they last longer and are easily modified. Castings can be produced in a wide range of metals.

Tooling - Investment Castings has its own In House Tooling Facility

We are one of only a few UK Investment Casting Foundries with an in house tooling facility...

Our In house tooling facility gives us complete control over the quality and integrity of the design stage to ensure that the product meets the customers needs.

Aluminium dies can be produced relatively cheaply compared to other Tools are designed to suit required production quantities, where large volume production we will design multi cavity tooling. Where necessary die modifications can be carried out quickly by our in-house toolmaker.

Working From Customers Drawings / CAD Data

We liase closely with customers throughout the design stage, focusing on our customers needs whilst using our expertise to develop workable ideas. We can produce completely new tooling from Customers drawings or CAD Data using the latest CAD (Computer Aided Design) Technology - Siemens Solid Edge™ PLM Software.

Rapid Prototype Service

In the event that you need a rapid prototype, we are able to take a concept or CAD drawing to produce a suitable pattern using any one of the latest techniques. We can use your CAD Data or Solid Model Files and work within tight deadlines to produce Rapid Prototypes in a wide range of materials. This capability allows us to produce samples in days, rather than weeks.

This enables us to produce components that exactly match our customers requirements - from conception through bespoke design to the finished components.

The Investment Casting Process - Specialist Precision Castings Manufacturer

The manufacture of castings involves highly skilled processes...

This highly skilled, highly technical process of manufacturing components to a high degree of accuracy is a fascinating story. We have a ten stage process from in-house tool maker producing an aluminium die, to the final stage where the casting is given a final polish or machining to complete the process. Please use the link below for a more detailed description of each stage.

Interesting Fact: The investment casting process, also known as the lost wax method has been in use for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians used this process to make jewellery and other ornate objects.

Post the Investment Casting Process

Minimum machining due to the accuracy of our casting process and our design capabilities...

Finishing - The finish is of sufficient quality that only minimal finishing is required to working surfaces. To meet customer requirements we can offer an extensive range of finishing processes and surface treatments, which are either carried out in house or with our approved Sub Contractors.

These include Alcroming / Anodising, Barrel Rumbling, Electropolishing, Electro Nickel Coating, Hand Polishing, Powder Coating, Vibro Polishing, Passivation, Painting, Non Destructive Testing and Zinc Plating.

Sub-Assembly - Our extensive capabilities enable us to produce a fully finished castings meeting all machining and finishing needs and even including sub-assembly, eliminating the need for customers to carry out any post processing.

One stop Service - Investment Castings (Congleton) Ltd. are proud of our ability to provide our customers with an end to end, one stop service cutting down on time scales and providing full traceability throughout the manufacturing process.

Investment Castings (Congleton) Ltd. Quality Commitment BS EN ISO 9001

Complete In-House design and manufacturing service...

Complete In-House Service - We offer a complete in-house end-to-end service that enables us to have complete quality control throughout the design stage and manufacturing processes. We incorporate our own in-house design and tooling facility, rapid prototyping, machining and finishing. We use the very latest manufacturing techniques monitored for excellence at every stage.

Re-investment is a continual process using all the latest production facilities and techniques to provide a consistently high quality casting.

Quality Procedures - We have a rigorous and demanding quality management system. Our commitment to the BSI standard (BS EN ISO 9001) provides full traceability throughout the manufacturing process as well as chemical analysis and non destructive testing (NDT). We are committed to quality and demonstrate this by having a quality control procedure in every operation of the casting process.

All materials are supplied by accredited companies giving full traceability from start to finish. Investment Castings (Congleton) Ltd. are accredited to BS EN ISO9001:2008 with BSI.
